Expanding validity horizons: using qualitative research methods in programmatic assessment


Marjan Govaerts (PhD) is an Associate Professor affiliated with the School of Health Professions Education (SHE), Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) at Maastricht University. Her main interests are in expertise development, and competency-based education and assessment in particular. At FHML, she was involved in design and implementation of e-portfolios and work-based assessment programmes in health professions education. Her research focuses on various aspects of competency-based assessment, and more specifically on assessor cognition, work-based assessment and programmatic assessment. She received several awards for her work as a researcher (AERA, Netherlands Association for Medical Education) and medical educator.

Prof. Dr. Wim Gijselaers, holds the chair of Educational Research at the Department for Educational Research and Development, School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University, the Netherlands. His research interests include Leader Identity Development, Organizational Learning, Team Learning, and Expertise Development. His educational development work focuses on the further development of Problem-Based Learning in Business Education. Next to teaching in the award-winning Master Program Learning and Development in Organizations, he teaches as a visiting professor at the University of Bern (Switzerland) in a post-graduate program for Health Care Professionals. Wim is a member of several international advisory boards of Institutes for Higher Education in Europe. He is one of the founding editors (currently associate editor) of the Springer Book Series Innovation and Change in Professional Education. He served positions as Program Director of International Business, and Vice Dean of Education. Currently, he is chair of the department of Educational Research and Development, at the School of Business and Economics (Maastricht University). Several of his Ph.D.’s received awards for their Ph.D. Thesis, papers presented at meetings of the American Educational Research Association, the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education, and the EARLI Special Interest Group 14 “Learning and Professional Development”.
